Passenger tax 'should be used for green purposes'
05 October 2007

The revenue raised from air passenger duty (APD) should be used to fund environmental research and initiatives, an industry body has claimed.

According to the Airport Operators Association (AOA), the way that tax revenue is used is just as important as the debate over how it is raised.

Chris Goater, spokesperson for the association, said: 'However the tax is raised, I think the important thing is: What is the money used for?

'We would like to see the money raised from APD used for environmental things. It might be more assertion development for cleaner aircraft, biofuels or rail links to airports.'

Mr Goater said that the different ways in which tax revenue could be used could reduce the environmental impact of air travel.

He also reiterated the AOA's opposition to the increase in APD that was implemented by the government earlier this year.
