Botswana 'to exceed worldwide tourism growth'
08 October 2007
Botswana's tourism industry will see a rate of growth in the coming years that exceeds average international levels, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
A recent report from the organisation predicted that the Botswana travel industry will see annual growth of 5% in coming years.
This projection exceeds the international average of 4.3% and also the sub-Saharan average of 4.5%.
Jean-Claude Baumgarten, president of the WTTC, explained that, despite these impressive expansion figures, Botswana is still relatively unknown to long-haul passengers as a travel destination.
'Although this growth is positive and the country is one of the Africa's most exciting travel destinations, it remains relatively unknown and is heavily dependent on intraregional tourists. Indeed, as far as long-haul markets are concerned, it is probably Africa's best-kept secret,' he said.
'However these forecasts show that, with the right policy framework, Botswana has the potential not only to expand rapidly but also to significantly broaden its tourism product base, appealing to a much wider range of tourist tastes and budgets.'
Botswana is a landlocked country in southern Africa and shares borders with Namibia and South Africa among others.
