Belfast 'making carbon savings'
09 October 2007

Belfast international airport has announced that 'major steps' have been taken towards the neutralisation of its carbon footprint.

The hub is making carbon savings following investment in an energy efficiency scheme run by independent supplier Energia, which is thought to be cutting electricity costs by £130,000 a year.

Colin Sloan, technical supervisor at the airport, explained: 'We have reduced our electricity consumption enormously through the installation of variable speed drives [VSDs] on our air handling units.

'This is a major cost saving and we are now investigating other possibilities among the airport's many systems.'

VSDs reduce energy use by fans, pumps and compressors and are particularly efficient in airports, supermarkets and other large enclosed public spaces.

Energia supplies a number of VSD projects across Northern Ireland that have reportedly led to annual savings of more than £530,000 in energy costs.
