More Brits visit Thailand in '06
09 October 2007

Some 745,525 people visited Thailand from the UK in 2006, 9.5% more than in the previous year, the country's tourism authority has revealed.

A more pronounced increase of 14% was seen in the number of travellers from Ireland, which stood at 56,994 in 2006, giving a combined total of over 802,000 visitors to Thailand from the UK and Ireland.

The busiest month of all in 2006 was December, which saw 86,210 people head to Thailand from the UK, nearly 10% more than the previous year.

Tanes Petsuwan, London director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said: 'We are delighted with Thailand's progress and TAT far exceeded its target of 700,000 UK visitors thanks to a large influx towards the end of the year.

'Full credit must be given to our partners for their continued support.'

British tourists account for the largest number of non-Asian visitors to Thailand and are sixth on the list of global travellers to the country, behind Malaysia, Japan, Korea, China and Singapore.
