12 October 2007

Mauritius saw nearly 17% more visitors arrive on its shores this September than in the same month in 2006, recently released figures show.

Some 65,542 people visited the island nation last month, compared to 56,138 in September 2006, according to official data seen by Reuters news agency.

In the first nine months of 2007 a total of 644,821 people travelled to Mauritius, an increase of over 18% on the corresponding period of 2006.

It has been forecast that tourist numbers will reach around 900,000 for the whole year and there are targets in place for this to climb to 2m visitors a year by 2015.

France was the largest market for Mauritius in September, accounting for 19% of all visitors, followed by Britain (16%) and South Africa (13%).

Mauritius is part of the Mascarene island group and is located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar.
