Eden Project 'best building of past 2 decades'
12 October 2007
The British Construction Industry (BCI) has named Cornwall tourist attraction the Eden Project the best building of the past 20 years.
At the 20th anniversary BCI awards the giant greenhouse took the 'best of the best' prize while the Channel Tunnel was named the past two decades' best civil engineering project.
It was not only the design of the distinctive Eden Project that was recognised by the accolade, as judges also based their decision on customer satisfaction, safety, innovation, sustainability and usability.
Tim Smit, Eden's chief executive, told the Independent: 'We are so proud and humbled to have won this award, especially in the light of the fabulous projects that Britain has spawned in a modern renaissance over the past two decades.
'For us it has been a privilege to have been offered the opportunity to follow our dreams and build 'Eden' and to watch the engineers, architects and landscape architects weave their genius.'
The Eden Project has attracted over 8m visitors and is thought to have generated around £800m for the regional economy since it opened in 2001.
