ACA moves to maintain Heathrow-Shannon link
15 October 2007
The Atlantic Connectivity Alliance (ACA), the group set up in response to Aer Lingus' decision to suspend services between Heathrow and Shannon airport, has made an application for slots at the London hub to ensure the link is maintained.
Aer Lingus confirmed earlier this year that it would be moving its services from Heathrow to Belfast International from January 2008.
In order to retain the link between London and the western region of Ireland, the ACA made an application for landing and take-off slots at Heathrow through Astraeus Airlines.
Astraeus, which is based in Crawley, England, currently has bases at Manchester and Gatwick and operates scheduled and chartered flights for around 50 tour operators.
The alliance is intending to offer services in line with the current schedule of flights between the London airport and Shannon.
Patricia McCarthy, mayor of County Clare and ACA member, said: 'The alliance has consistently highlighted the importance of maintaining quality and permanent connectivity between the western region and Heathrow.'
John Brassil, chairman of the ACA, added: 'The alliance is absolutely intent on doing everything possible to ensure continuity of a Shannon Heathrow air link and will leave no stone unturned in pursuing this objective.'
