Luxury, eco-responsibility 'can go hand in hand'
15 October 2007

A resort in Slovakia has won a 'green tourism' award, leading its owner to claim that luxury holidays and environmental responsibility 'can go hand in hand'.

The AquaCity complex in Poprad was named the world's leading green resort at the World Travel Awards.

It took the accolade ahead of resorts in the Maldives, the Caribbean, South America and Australia.

Jan Talensky, owner and chief executive of AquaCity, explained that the resort's green achievements had been made possible through the use of geothermal water and the harnessing of solar energy to power its hotels, pools, spa and leisure facilities.

He added: 'AquaCity is now a globally recognised example of how we can create sustainable tourism, one of the most overwhelming issues the travel industry faces today.

'It is a blueprint for future tourism and a far-reaching example of how to use green technology to commercial advantage.'

Poprad is a town and municipality in northern Slovakia at the foot of the Tatra mountains.
