Iata makes progress on mobile check-in
15 October 2007

The International Air Transport Association (Iata) has announced a standardised process that will pave the way for global mobile phone check-in.

A worldwide standard for the use of two-dimensional barcodes as boarding passes will mean that passengers do not need to take any paperwork to the airport with them.

The procedure of mobile check-in will see customers registering their phone number with their airline when they book their tickets so they can receive a text message with their unique barcode.

Travellers will then show their barcode at the check-in desk at the airport, making paper tickets unnecessary.

Giovanni Bisignani, director general and CEO of Iata, said: 'Passengers want the convenience of self-service options in a paperless environment.

'This standard is an important step in getting rid of paper that bogs down processes and drives up costs.'

A deadline has been set for the industry-wide implementation of barcode boarding passes by the end of 2010.
