New York 'still top for shopping trips'
16 October 2007

New York continues to be the number one city in the world for combining a holiday with a Christmas shopping trip, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

However Sean Tipton, spokesperson for the association, said that the superiority of the American metropolis has been challenged somewhat in recent years by certain destinations in Europe.

'In terms of Christmas shopping New York is still the most popular,' he said. 'What is getting more popular, and has been for a few years, is people travelling around Germany, and eastern Europe to a lesser extent, going to Christmas markets.

'It's as much for the cultural experience as for the shopping.'

Commenting on the factors that motivate people to take shopping trips, Mr Tipton pointed out that the pound had recently hit the 'magic $2 barrier'.

He also explained that, irrespective of the exchange rate, America is considerably cheaper than the UK, particularly for people buying clothes and electrical goods.
