New Stansted terminal reaches milestone
16 October 2007

The expansion of the terminal at Stansted airport has reached a milestone, with the first of several roof domes successfully lifted into place.

Some 22 separate domes, each weighing 30 tonnes and measuring 18 square metres, will eventually be put in place to form the roof of the terminal.

A 450-tonne crane will be used to install the roof, with a 75-metre safety exclusion zone put in place to ensure that disruption to the normal operation of the airport is kept to a minimum.

BAA Stansted's Paul Chatten, who is managing the development, said: 'The project has already made excellent progress since getting underway in April of this year.

'We have now reached one of the most significant stages of the development as we undertake a series of complex roof lifts – this is not your everyday roofing job!'

By the time it is complete the £40m expansion will create an extra 5,900 square metres of space in Stansted's international arrivals area.

An enlarged immigration, baggage and customs hall is set to open in June 2008, with a final completion date set for December 2008.
