Brits 'embracing self-service'
18 October 2007

British travellers are showing increasing interest in self-service options and taking control of their own holidays, a survey has revealed.

Technology and communications company Sita surveyed 100 airlines and found that over half offer online check-in and 89% expect to offer it within two years.

Among the top 25 passenger-carrying airlines polled, there was 100% implementation of web check-in.

Respondents to the survey reported that 21% of their passengers, which numbered around a billion, had checked in online and this proportion is expected to climb to 35% by the end of 2008.

Just under half of the travelling public is set to be making use of airport kiosks by the end of next year, enabling them to avoid queues.

Sita chairman Paul Coby said: 'Airlines are increasingly using web check-in because they want to make travel easier for their passengers. What could be simpler than going on-line and checking yourself in?

'Furthermore, it's relatively easy to deploy and saves cost, so it's a win-win for both passengers and airlines.'
