Olympics 'will leave London a world class transport system'
23 October 2007

The 2012 Olympic Games will leave a legacy of world class transport in London, according to the organisation responsible for overseeing the event.

At the heart of the Olympic Delivery Authority's (ODA) transport plan for 2012 is a goal of encouraging all spectators to walk, cycle or use public transport to get to the Games.

In order to achieve this, however, the authority said that it is essential for a reliable and comprehensive transport system to be in place.

The ODA therefore plans to enhance and upgrade existing links, create new trains and platforms, improve stations and offer new walking and cycling routes.

David Higgins, ODA chief executive, said: 'The Olympic Park will host the world's biggest sporting event in 2012 and will become a new destination in east London after the Games have gone.

'It is essential we put in place world-class transport links to make this one of the best connected parts of the capital.'

Every day of the 2012 Olympic Games is expected to attract 500,000 visitors from across the UK and overseas to various venues around London.

Events will be held at a number of different locations, including the ExCel Centre; an aquatics venue, where construction will begin in 2008; Earl's Court and Hyde Park.
