Nude sleepwalkers an increasing problem for hotel chains
25 October 2007
There must be something about staying in a hotel that encourages strange sleeping habits, as hospitality chain Travelodge has released a report on the growing problems it is experiencing with nude sleepwalkers.
The company's annual research on the issue found a sevenfold increase in sleepwalking customers this year compared to 2006.
And a massive 95% of the people that have walked around Travelodge properties in their sleep have been men, most of whom happened to be wearing no clothes at the time of their nocturnal wanderings.
Nude sleepwalkers have appeared at the reception desks of a number of hotels across the UK asking to be pointed to the bathroom, demanding to check out in order to get to work on time and requesting a daily newspaper.
One naked late-night wanderer even managed to lock himself out of the hotel and eventually get arrested.
In response to this growing problem Travelodge has issues a 'sleepwalkers guide' to its staff, informing them of how to handle somnambulists and recommending a plentiful supply of towels in order to avoid some embarrassing situations.
Leigh McCarron, the chain's sleep director, said: 'Sleepwalking is on the rise throughout the UK. We have seen an increased number of cases over the years so it is important that our staff know how to help sleepwalkers when it arises.'
