Edinburgh to host six-week new year party
31 October 2007

A six-week festival will be hosted in Edinburgh from 22 November to celebrate Christmas and see in the new year.

The Edinburgh Winter Festival will involve parades, firework shows, markets and other attractions and culminate in the Hogmanay street party on 31 December.

Light Night will get the celebrations off to a start on 22 November, with Edinburgh's giant Norwegian Christmas tree illuminated in Princes Street Gardens and the city's festive lights switched on.

In addition to the traditional German market selling mulled wine and various delicacies there will be a Scottish market this year offering local produce, gifts and handicrafts.

Throughout the six weeks of the festival there will be a number of outdoor performances, concerts and exhibitions, including the famous Santa Run, to keep visitors entertained.

There will then be a four-day extravaganza to see in the new year, with a torchlight procession and a candlelit concert in St Giles Cathedral among the many elements of the Hogmanay celebration.

Visitors with particularly thick skins can even take part in the Loony Dook on New Year's Day, which involves hundreds of people leaping into the icy waters of Edinburgh's River Forth.
