Modern airports 'encouraging use of touchscreens'
05 November 2007

Modern airports are designed to encourage the use of self-service check-in facilities, according to BAA.

A spokesperson for the airports operator said that touchscreen machines allowing passengers to check themselves in are increasing in number at hubs around the UK.

'The ones we have are for people checking in, we have a number of generic ones which a number of different airlines use, but most of the major airlines now have their own - Virgin have their own, British Airways have their own and United Airlines have their own,' he said.

'The feedback we're getting back from them is that significantly more and more people are using them. British Airways are expecting about 80 per cent of people will be checking in online or using self-service kiosks.'

The BAA representative said that modern airports are designed around the use of touchscreen check-in machines as well as fast bag-drop and other self-service facilities.

Commenting on the specific advantages of self-service machines, he said: 'They mainly increase speed…Also, they take up much less room so you can put more kiosks in than check-in desks.'
