Bmi strengthens US network

Heathrow's second largest carrier, bmi, today launched five new services to the USA.
The new destinations are all major US gateways - Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, San Francisco and Denver - and have been opened up following the recently negotiated Open Skies Agreement.
They will be run as part of a code-sharing deal with US operator United Airlines and will come into effect from 30 March 2008, immediately prior to the summer traffic season.
Nigel Turner, bmi chief executive officer, said: 'Whilst delaying the introduction of our own services from Heathrow to the USA, we said that we would still take full advantage of an Open Skies Agreement between the EU and the USA. This codeshare agreement with United Airlines allows us to do just that.'
The Open Skies treaty is intended to open up major routes between the EU and the US, effectively exposing Heathrow and other major airports to greater international competition.
At present just four airlines - British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, United Airlines and American Airlines - are able to run transatlantic services out of Heathrow.
