Spend a night in the slammer in New Zealand
08 November 2007
Spending a night in prison is generally considered a bad thing, but for many visitors to New Zealand it has become a highly desirable activity, with the country's Napier jail now a top tourist attraction.
According to the latest list of the top destinations and experiences around the world from travel guide Lonely Planet, staying overnight in Napier jail is one of the activities all New Zealand visitors should take part in.
As the country's oldest prison, Napier used to house all manner of undesirables, including drug barons, gang members and the criminally insane.
"Guests can tour the hanging yard, sleep in converted cells and get a mug shot taken as a memento of their time in the clink," the Lonely Planet guide says.
Among the other inclusions in the list of activities in New Zealand is a visit to the Te Puke kiwifruit sign, jetboating on the Shotover River and a trip to the White Island volcano.
The Shotover is located among New Zealand's Southern Alps and is one of the many locations around the islands that were used for the Lord of the Rings films.
