'Sinful' Yorkshire hopes to lure Spanish visitors
12 November 2007
The Yorkshire Tourist Board (YTB) has launched a campaign to market the northern county to Spanish tourists, using the unusual theme of the seven deadly sins.
A light-hearted campaign will be launched in Barcelona today (12 November) to take advantage of the fact that new routes have recently been launched connecting Yorkshire to the Iberian peninsula, the Yorkshire Post reports.
Destinations in the county will be marketed using the various themes of sinfulness, with cultural hotspots Saltaire and Haworth falling under the 'lust' category.
The sin of wrath is represented by York, owing to its Viking history, while Harrogate and its Turkish baths offers visitors the opportunity to indulge their slothful sides.
Yorkshire currently welcomes fewer visitors from Spain than any other European country, but YTB marketing director Joanna Royle said that it was a 'growing market'.
She added: 'The latest International Passenger Survey figures show that during the five-year period 2000 to 2005, Spanish visits to the UK grew by 100% and with the opening of new routes from mainland Spain scheduled for the coming year it looks set to grow further.
'To ensure Yorkshire achieves its slice of the market, the 'Seven Deadly Sins' campaign showcases the brand values that set Yorkshire apart from the rest of England.'
