Austrian Tirol sees over 1m of snow
13 November 2007

The Tirol Tourist Board has announced that over one metre of snow has fallen in the Austrian skiing hotspot.

Following a sustained period of poor conditions for skiers and snowboarders, the Tirol has now seen its biggest November snowfall for over 30 years.

And the good situation is not confined to the glaciers and high resorts, as popular spots such as St Anton and Kitzbuhel are also covered in up to 1.5 metres of snow, the Tirol Tourist Board said.

In order to take advantage of the bountiful conditions a number of ski areas are opening a month earlier than planned and five ski glaciers are already open.

Weather forecasts suggest a positive outlook, with more snow expected this week to add to the existing base of fresh powder.

A recent report from insurance company American Express indicated that snow conditions in Europe were deteriorating so much that skiers and snowboarders were looking as far afield as Chile and Japan to pursue their pastime.
