Tourism booming for Mauritius in '07

The African island of Mauritius has seen its tourism industry boom in 2007 and expects significantly increased earnings from the sector this year.

Forecasts from the country's central statistics office suggest that the tourism industry will contribute 38.84bn Mauritius rupees (£631.3m) to the economy this year, compared to 31.94bn rupees in 2006.

Between January and September this year tourists brought 28.4bn rupees into the Mauritian economy, 28.8% more than the 22.06bn in 2006.

Some 900,000 people are expected to visit the island of Mauritius in 2007, compared to around 788,300 last year.

In October alone more than 81,200 tourists visited the country, which was an increase of 7.7% on the previous year, providing jobs for more than 26,300 people.

Mauritius lies in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of the continental mainland of Africa.
