Aussie travellers get hot under the collar
20 November 2007
A flight to Australia's Gold Coast was grounded on 19 November when the plane's air conditioning failed, causing the temperature in the cabin to skyrocket.
The aircraft was full of recently graduated high school pupils, known as schoolies in Australia, and holidaymakers who quickly found the heat too much to bear, Australia's News.com reports.
Passengers sat waiting on the tarmac in Melbourne for the Virgin Blue flight to depart, but it was decided that the only option was to ground the plane when temperatures hit an estimated 40 degrees C inside the cabin.
Melbourne sales manager Noel Henderson described the inside of the jet as 'absolutely stinking hot'.
He added: 'The plane was full of schoolies and holidaymakers all wearing shorts and t-shirts but they were all still sweating. They were trying to make the most of it but it all went a bit pear-shaped for them.
'A few comments like, "are we going to the Gold Coast or are we already in Bali?" started to rumble around the cabin.'
A spokeswoman for Virgin Blue attributed the problem to a faulty air conditioning plane and said that passengers had been placed on the next available flight.
