Brazil visitor numbers climb in October
22 November 2007

Brazil saw a 15.2% year-on-year increase in visitor numbers in October, with 552,520 people arriving in the country.

This is an increase from the 479,550 who visited the South American nation in October 2006, according to figures from the national tourism institute.

Based on the performance of Brazil's travel industry so far this year, the country's tourism industry is predicting that its total number of visitors in 2007 should exceed that of last year, when international arrivals topped the 6.3m mark.

Some 532,840 travellers arrived via regular flights in October, 18% more than the 451,330 a year earlier.

The tourism institute said that this represented the second consecutive month in which the rate of growth was greater than the general average.

Brazil is the largest country in South America and home to such iconic tourist locations as the statue of Christ the Redeemer, which overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro, and Copacabana beach.
