Eco-warriors rely on chocolate to reach Timbuktu
23 November 2007
A pair of environmentalists are planning a marathon road trip to the fabled city of Timbuktu using fuel derived purely from chocolate.
A factory in Preston has received truckloads of confectionery products that will be transformed into biofuel, which Andy Pag from London and John Grimshaw from Dorset will use to power their 6,400km trip.
They will set off in their eco-friendly lorry from the south coast of England, drive across France and Spain before entering Africa via Morocco.
The pair will then enter Mauritania and drive across part of the Sahara desert to enter Mali before arriving in Timbuktu.
It is not just for the adventure that Mr Pag and Mr Grimshaw are embarking on their trip, however, as there is an environmental message behind the journey.
'Timbuktu is renowned for being the back of beyond,' explained Mr Pag.
'If we can make it all the way there on bio-diesel made from chocolate, then there's no reason why people at home can't run their car to the supermarket on the same thing.'
