New Kenya restaurant to cause a splash
26 November 2007

A floating restaurant has been built in Kenya that is expected to become a popular haunt for tourists.

The unusual construction, which may be developed into a fully-fledged hotel, was built by developer Gerard Johnson owing to the cost of land in popular areas of Kenya, the Nation reports.

Mr Johnson, who has worked on some of the most exotic resorts in the African country, decided that the expense involved in building on land, combined with the difficulty of avoiding conservation areas, made it worthwhile to consider opening an establishment on water.

He therefore set to work opening a floating restaurant in Kenya's Lamu archipelago and now intends to develop the eatery into a hotel.

'This is what I would call the first phase of the project,' Mr Johnson said.

He added: 'The floating restaurant and bar we have named Chonjo is built on local palm fronds supported by coconut timber. It is built and decorated with local materials without any steel or concrete.'

The restaurant, which floats off the Manda beach, is open to the public daily and serves seafood delicacies as well as other dishes and drinks.
