Massive moose hoped to lure Sweden visitors
30 November 2007
An enormous wooden moose is to be constructed in northern Sweden in a bid to attract more tourists to the region.
Tourism associations decided to build the monument, which will be 45 metres tall and 47 metres long, to gain some exposure for northern Sweden and encourage travellers to explore the area.
The wooden moose will house a restaurant in its belly, as well as a concert hall, conference rooms and a shop.
It will be positioned so that its gigantic hooves are planted in two different counties - Vasterbotten and Norrbottten - at a site some 870km north of the capital of Stockholm.
Tourism promoter Thorbjorn Holmlund said that the remoteness of the area means that not many people know about it, but stressed that there is a lot to see and do.
Commenting on the choice of animal, Mr Holmlund said: 'The reason we decided to build a moose is because there is something magnificent about the animal. It's the king of the forest.'
