Golden Compass 'to direct tourists to Oxford'
30 November 2007

New movie The Golden Compass is set to boost Oxford's tourism industry by attracting an extra 1m visitors to the region next year, the city council has predicted.

The new fantasy film, which is adapted from Philip Pullman novel Northern Lights, features a number of distinctive Oxford locations, including Radcliffe Square, Christ Church and Exeter College, the Oxford Mail reports.

City council facilities manager Jane Lubbock said that the film could generate an additional £15m for the local economy and help the city break the 10m mark for visitors in 2008.

'This film is great news for Oxford. It is a significant help to us breaking the 10m figure,' Ms Lubbock said.

'People planning their holidays next year will see the film and it will remind them that Oxford is a great place to come and see.'

The so-called 'set-jetter' phenomenon has proved beneficial for Oxford in the past, with films from the Harry Potter franchise and The Italian Job helping to boost tourism in the area.
