Tibet sees sharp rise in tourism

A total of 3.72m tourists visited the Chinese-governed province, marking a year-on-year increase of 64% and drumming up total tourism revenue of 4.4bn yuan (£290m) for the period.
While the majority its visitors came from the Chinese mainland, the bureau said 350,000 were overseas tourists - a dramatic 150% increase on the figures for 2006.
Of those, the largest proportion - 78,000 - were Japanese tourists, while 58,000 Americans also visited the region as did significant numbers of European travellers.
Tibet has been under the Chinese rule since 1950 and though parts of the region's historical territory have gradually been absorbed into the mainland, its unique cultural integrity remains in tact.
The province's most revered religious and moral figure - the 14th Dalai Lama - has been in exile since 1959. He is currently conducting a world tour giving philosophical teachings.
