Edinburgh airport 'needs 1,500 new hotel rooms'
03 December 2007

Edinburgh airport will require more than 1,500 new hotel rooms over the next five years if it is to cope with rising passenger traffic, city planners have warned.

The hub currently handles around 8.9m travellers a year but this is expected to rise to 13m by 2013 and 23m by 2030, the Scotsman reports.

Some 1,550 hotel rooms are needed over the next five years to cater for this growing demand and an additional 2,100 will be necessary by 2030, planners predicted.

A spokeswoman for Edinburgh airport said that additional accommodation provision is 'key' if passengers are to be provided with quality and choice.

City councillor Jim Lowrie said: 'Edinburgh airport is identified as a gateway to Edinburgh and Scotland.

'This report gives further evidence of Edinburgh's growing success and the need to manage that growth in a planned and structured way.'

Edinburgh recently announced that its passengers now have direct access to more than 100 destinations, with 29 extra routes coming into operation in 2007 alone.
