Continental launches offset scheme
03 December 2007
Continental Airlines has launched a carbon offset scheme for its passengers, which it claims is part of its ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.
Customers will be given the opportunity to view the carbon footprint of their itinerary and make a contribution to non-profit organisation Sustainable Travel International.
These donations will be used to fund the purchase of carbon offsets generated by sustainable development projects, which are designed to reduce the impact of carbon dioxide emissions.
Continental claims that it has achieved an almost 35% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption over the past ten years.
This is due in part to investment of more than $12bn (£6.1bn) in 270 fuel-efficient aircraft, the airline said.
Sustainable Travel International president Brian T Mullis said: 'Having a high-profile, high-quality offset program available to Continental's customers is a significant step for mainstreaming carbon offsetting in air travel.
'When combined with energy efficiency, greater use of renewable resources, waste reduction and thoughtful consumption, offsetting offers a solid strategy for addressing concerns associated with climate change.'
