Arab countries 'leading hotel industry'
03 December 2007
Arab nations are leading the international hotel industry, building the largest and most expensive hospitality establishments across the globe, according to a report.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and its neighbouring countries are developing hotels worth a total of $18bn (£8.7bn), data from a Dubai research firm shows.
Hotels currently under development in the UAE are thought to be worth some $12.7bn, making the country the leading member of the drive to push forward the hotel industry, according to Dubai-based ProLeads.
Other nations are also involved in the initiative, however, with Maggie Moore, exhibition director of the Hotel Show 2008, saying that Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain are 'in the midst of a construction boom', Reuters reports.
One hotel currently in development is Dubai's Asia-Asia establishment, which is set to cost some $1.63bn and house 6,500 rooms, overtaking Las Vegas' MGM Grand as the world's largest hotel.
Some 100 extra hotels are expected to open in the UAE by the end of 2010.
