Land down under continues to beguile Brits
04 December 2007
British travellers' affection for all things Antipodean has once again been illustrated, with the Telegraph Travel Awards 2007 finding that Australia and New Zealand are among Britons' top three worldwide destinations.
Another far-flung location - the Maldives in the Indian Ocean - also made the top three.
The city holiday market also appears to be shaped by Britons' appetite for long-haul travel, with Sydney, Cape Town and Vancouver emerging as the most popular foreign cities.
Telegraph readers said that Italy, Greece and Switzerland were their favourite countries within Europe.
Looking even closer to home, York, Edinburgh and Bath were voted the most popular UK cities, while Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham are the three British airports that holidaymakers are happiest to use.
Many travellers will be looking forward to ski holidays as winter sets in and, based on the Telegraph Travel Awards, the most popular locations for this pursuit will be Val d'Isere, France; Meribel, also in France; and Whistler, Canada.
Singapore Airlines took top spot in the scheduled carrier category, while Bangkok's Shangri-La emerged as the most popular city hotel.
