Opera fans 'to flock to Italy'
05 December 2007

Fans of opera, and of the work of Giacomo Puccini in particular, are expected to flock to Italy in 2008 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth.

Every year the hamlet of Torre del Lago hosts an opera festival that attracts around 40,000 visitors and the event is set to be particularly popular in 2008.

The Nuovo Gran Teatro at Torre del Lago, a 3,200-seat open-air arena overlooking Lake Massaciuccoli, will be opened to mark the 150th anniversary of Puccini's birth.

Next year's Puccini festival will be opened on 11 July, with a new version of Turandot, while Tosca will get its first showing on 12 July.

Madame Butterfly, arguably Puccini's most famous work, will be performed on 20 July, with further showings on the two following weekends and on 17 August, while Edgar will also be included in the summer programme.

Torre del Lago is part of the town of Viareggio in Tuscany, a region on the Tyrrhenian Sea that is known for its mountainous, rolling landscapes and picturesque rural villages.
