Boring tour sparks tourist revolt
05 December 2007
Tourists in Macau were so disappointed by the tour that they were being taken on that they decided the only solution was to stage a revolt, according to reports.
Disgruntled Chinese visitors were reportedly unimpressed with the fact that they were being taken around shops rather than sites of historical interest.
At one point the holidaymakers were taken to one of Macau's main beaches but were not allowed to return to their bus to pick up warmer clothing when it began to get cold, the South China Morning Post reports.
Irritation rose to such a point that a scuffle broke out between the tourists and their guides, leading to the police being called.
However, the attending officers were unable to placate the angry mob and were confronted by holidaymakers.
The paper quotes one officer as saying: "Some tourists refused to let some of our colleagues go and attempted to use violence."
Government officials were eventually called in to calm the situation, but not before four people were detained for questioning.
