International passenger traffic rises in October
05 December 2007
The number of people using international air services rose at a year-on-year rate of 7.7% in October, the latest figures show.
According to the International Air Transport Association (Iata), October's growth rate was down slightly from the 8.2% recorded in September.
Airlines in the Middle East saw the most pronounced increase in traffic, with over 20% more passengers using these services in October 2007 that the previous year, while Latin American carriers (19%) and African airlines (10.8%) also experienced growth.
Iata said that the 7.3% rate of increase in passenger traffic for the first ten months of the year indicates that demand for air travel remains robust, despite some parts of the global economy slowing this year.
Giovanni Bisignani, the association's director general, was cautious in his outlook, saying: 'Passenger demand remains strong, but this is a cyclical industry.
'The next months will be critical to see if the impact of the credit crunch spreads from cargo to corporate and leisure travel.'
