Turkey shortlisted for 'excellence' award
05 December 2007
Turkey is among the countries that have been shortlisted for an EC 'European destination of excellence' award.
The competition is designed to recognise Europe's most popular tourist destination of 2007, with the eventual winner set to be announced next year.
Representatives from Turkey's ministry of culture and tourism will be assigned to decide which particular destination will be put forward to represent the country, Turkish Press reports.
A statement on the EC website said that those locations most likely to win the award will show that they have developed a tourism offer based on 'the appreciation of their specific local intangible heritage'.
Turkey will be competing with the strongest members of the European travel industry, including Spain, France, Cyprus and Greece.
There are also a number of new and emerging locations on the shortlist, including Romania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland and Latvia.
