Continental Airlines is the top US carrier for North American travel, according to the results of a new survey.

The operator also outranked its American competitors in the Business Traveller magazine study in categories relating to in-flight services and flight attendants.

Jim Compton, Continental's executive vice-president of marketing, said the award was down to the airline's retention of popular services that have been phased out by other carriers.

'Unlike our competitors, Continental Airlines has maintained cabin comforts and continues to provide complimentary meals at mealtimes,' he said.

'We are continuing to modernise our fleet by taking delivery of two to three new aircraft each month in 2008, while upgrading existing aircraft with in-seat power and video on demand.'

Continental also announced today that it had applied to the US department of transportation to be the first American carrier to provide a daily, overnight service between Houston, Texas and Bogota, the capital of Colombia.
