Southampton prepares for Xmas getaway
14 December 2007
Southampton airport has said that it is preparing for a 'Christmas getaway', with some 77,000 passengers expected over the festive period.
The number of passengers jetting off from the south coast over Christmas and new year is expected to make 2007-08 the busiest festive season that Southampton has experienced in its 97-year history.
Demand is expected to mostly be centred around domestic flights, with Edinburgh, Glasgow, Jersey, Guernsey and Manchester expected to be the top five destinations.
However, Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin also make it into the top ten, along with Newcastle and Belfast City.
Southampton also offers services to ski destinations that are set to be in demand over the winter, including Berne, Chambery, Geneva and even Lapland, which is expected to attract around 450 visitors.
If the airport's predictions are accurate, then a busy December will follow a similarly active November, when over 149,000 passengers passed through Southampton, 2% more than in the previous year.
