Tibet tourism 'to break records this year'
17 December 2007

The Tibetan tourism industry is expected to hit new highs and break previous records this year, Chinese state media has reported.

Some 4.02m people are expected to have visited Tibet in 2007, which would represent a year-on-year increase of 64%.

Zhang Qingli of the Communist Party of China described the past year as 'the golden time of Tibet tourism'.

He added: 'The traditional low season of tourism, usually beginning after the Golden Week of National Holiday in October, seems not low at all.'

Revenue from tourism is expected to reach some 4.8bn yuan (£323m) this year, 73% up on 2006.

A number of factors are thought to have contributed to the growth in Tibetan tourism this year, including the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet railway and the operation of a third civilian airport in Nyingchi.

The region also has 88 star-level hotels to accommodate visitors and 56 travel agencies.
