Heathrow to launch futuristic transport system
18 December 2007
A new transport scheme is to be launched at Heathrow airport that will utilise futuristic, driverless pods to carry passengers to their terminal or gate.
The Personal Rapid Transit System will initially be used at Terminal Five, the passenger facility due to open at Heathrow in spring next year, to ferry travellers between the business car park and the terminal.
Up to four people carrying luggage will be able to fit in the pods, which will be guided around the airport on a dedicated track.
A fleet of 18 vehicles will be used when the initiative launches in 2009.
Passengers are expected to see fewer queues and less congestion, while the environment will also benefit as the system is entirely battery-powered and produces no local emissions.
Mark Bullock, managing director of Heathrow, said: 'This innovative system forms part of BAA's plan to transform Heathrow, improve the passenger experience and reduce the environmental impact of our operation through the development of cutting edge, green transport solutions.'
