Qinghai-Tibet railway 'to carry 1.6m this year'
20 December 2007

The Qinghai-Tibet railway is on target to carry 1.6m passengers this year, according to reports.

Tibet's tourism authority said that the figure was four times greater than that recorded in the second half of 2006, following the railway's opening on 1 July.

Between July 2006 and June this year, some 1.5m people travelled to the autonomous region of Tibet by train, the Xinhua news agency reports.

More than half of these are thought to have been tourists, both domestic and international.

Measuring 1,956km, the Qinghai-Tibet railway was the first train service connecting Tibet to the outside world. It now transports three quarters of the goods transferred between Tibet and China.

The whole of Tibet is set to see a record 4.02m tourists in 2007, generating revenue of 4.8bn yuan (£327.6m) for the regional economy.
