Boss apologises for travel firm collapse
24 December 2007
Thousands of Brits hoping to jet off for a break over Christmas have had their plans ruined by the collapse of a travel firm.
As many as 10,000 people now have to rush to make alternative arrangements to their festive travel plans after Travelscope went into administration following cash flow difficulties.
Some 30,000 more travellers also affected by the collapse, but had made plans for holidays later in the year.
Travelscope managing director Richard Ford took "full responsibility" for the firm's entry into administration.
He explained that although the company had £15 million in the bank, it had suffered from two cancelled cruises, the threat of legal action from a death on a cruise ship last year and its recent £6 million spending on a new building.
As well as leaving thousands of people with travel plans to rearrange and the possibility of losing their cash, the collapse means some 200 Travelscope staff face redundancy, although they will receive their December pay packet.
Apologising to customers - and especially those planning to travel this Christmas and New Year - Mr Ford said: "We did try to sort the problem out so they could travel, but it proved not to be possible."
