Flight chaos eases after fog lifts
24 December 2007
Festive holidaymakers have had their chances of getting away this Christmas increased due to brightening weather following a weekend of fog.
Although flights were not halted at major airports such as Heathrow or Gatwick, a reduced service was run to ensure safety - leaving many facing severe delays.
More than 1,000 people were stranded overnight at Heathrow after some 140 flights were grounded at the London airport.
But improving conditions meant that only 29 flights were cancelled outright at Heathrow and a spokesman for Heathrow told the BBC: "The situation will improve as the day goes on."
Around the country, there were similar difficulties due to the heavy fog this weekend - with Manchester airport cancelling two flights and airports in Edinburgh and Glasgow grounding five.
But it was not just flights that suffered in the poor travelling conditions over the busy pre-Christmas weekend, with long tailbacks for drivers in the East Midlands, the north of England and Scotland, as well as on the M1, M4, M62, M60, M25 and the M5.
