Xmas travellers 'opting for club'
28 December 2007
People travelling abroad over the Christmas period are more likely to treat themselves to a luxury seat than during other seasons, Virgin Atlantic has claimed.
A spokesperson for the airline singled out its new Mauritius route as one with particularly strong demand for club and first-class seats, due in large part to high numbers of honeymooners and people celebrating their wedding anniversaries.
At the same time, other holidaymakers are apparently looking to ease the burden of visiting relatives and friends abroad by splashing out on seats with more legroom and better in-flight services and facilities.
'Christmas tends to be a time when many travel to see their friends and family around the world and on some occasions they will decide to treat themselves,' spokesperson Anna Knowles said.
She added: 'More popular occasions tend to be milestone birthdays, wedding anniversaries with the most popular occasion tending to be honeymoons.'
Industry experts at last month's World Travel Market conference in London predicted that the number of economy seats on commercial aircraft will gradually fall as upgrades grow in popularity.
