New Year trips 'a bargain'
28 December 2007
Shrewd holidaymakers can capitalise on the seasonal lull in travel over the New Year and snap up a bargain, the Association of British Travel Agents has claimed.
According to a spokesperson for the organisation, which represents over 6,000 travel agencies in Britain, January is often the cheapest time to travel 'pretty much anywhere' except the Caribbean.
The spokesperson noted that many destinations have off-season slumps for purely logistical reasons, with low-cost airlines curtailing charter flights to destinations such as Greece in order to save money.
Infrequent services remain in operation, however, and according to the spokesperson savvy travellers can 'really clean up' by doing their homework and booking a last-minute deal.
'You've got the peak weeks over Christmas and New Year,' she explained. 'And then if you look in the brochures for January, it's probably one of the cheapest weeks of the year to go on holiday.'
A recent survey by one leading online travel agent found that seven out of ten Brits have over half their annual holiday entitlement left to use at the end of the calendar year.
