VLM sees benefit of train troubles
03 January 2008

VLM Airlines has revealed that the problems in the rail network have boosted air services between London and north England.

Maintenance company Network Rail failed to complete engineering works on time over the new year period, leading to delays and disruption for thousands of people returning to work on 2 January.

London Liverpool Street station was closed as a result of the late-running work, while services from London to Birmingham, Northampton, Liverpool and other locations were cancelled.

VLM Airlines said that the problems led to its return flights between London City and Manchester being almost sold out on 2 January, with forward bookings also strong.

Johan Vanneste, managing director of VLM Airlines, said: 'Network Rail's failure to complete engineering work has crippled rail services between London and Manchester, and we are pleased that we have attracted new customers who have been able to experience our fast and convenient service.'

Mr Vanneste said that the London City-Manchester route is one of VLM's most important services and has seen considerable growth in the five years since its introduction.
