Ancient palace reopened in Myanmar
03 January 2008
An ancient palace has been reopened in Myanmar to boost the local tourism industry, according to reports.
The Thiri Zeya Bumi Bagan Golden Palace dates back to Myanmar's first ancient empire and was owned by King Anawratha.
It is among four ancient palaces that have been rebuilt since 1988 and is based on its original architectural style, the Xinhua news agency reports.
The other three ancient structures are based in Bago, Shwebo and Mandalay.
As well as reconstructing the Bagan palace, the Myanmar ministry of culture built a 13-storey viewing tower and a hotel in the area in an attempt to boost the local tourism infrastructure.
Bagan is home to four hotel zones, including 80 hotels, motels and inns with nearly 2,000 rooms that have been upgraded to serve visitors.
Myanmar, also known as Burma, is located in southern Asia and shares borders with Bangladesh, Thailand and Laos.
