Atlanta airport still America's busiest
03 January 2008

Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta international airport is still the busiest air hub in the USA, according to new figures.

Atlanta was America's, and therefore the world's, busiest airport for the third year running in 2007, with a total of 994,466 flights, up 1.8% on 2006.

Chicago O'Hare was the second busiest US airport last year, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), with 935,000 flights.

This was down 2.4% from the 958,643 takeoffs and landings that Chicago handled in 2006, the FAA said.

One of the most important elements of Atlanta's success is the fact that it is the hub of Delta Air Lines, which represented more than 70% of the total scheduled flight volume at the airport last year.

Tad Hutcheson, spokesperson for Orlando-based carrier AirTran, told the Associated Press: 'What makes Atlanta work is…you have the world's largest hub in Delta's Atlanta hub.

'AirTran operates the world's largest low-cost carrier hub. That's what makes Atlanta the world's busiest airport.'
