Airport strikes called off
03 January 2008

Strikes that could have caused severe disruption to holidaymakers' travel plans this month have been called off, reports claim.

Members of the trade union Unite voted in December to take industrial action following a dispute with airport operator BAA over the closure of the company's final salary pension scheme to new members.

Talks at the end of December led to the first of the strikes, on 7 January, being cancelled, and further discussions this week concluded with the remaining two stoppages, scheduled for 14 and 17 January, being called off.

If they had gone ahead, the strikes would have caused major disruption to thousands of travellers using airports including Heathrow, Gatwick and Edinburgh.

Unite claimed that the talks had ended well for BAA workers, according to Reuters.

'Our members' pension scheme is financially sound, and there is no reason to close it to new entrants,' the union said in a statement.

'We are glad that BAA accepts that no changes should be introduced without proper consultation.'
