Nepal welcomes record visitor numbers
03 January 2008

Nepal welcomed a record 550,000 tourists in 2007, according to new figures.

Within this number, 360,350 used flights to reach the country while others came by land, the People's Daily Online reports.

The Nepal tourism industry has experienced a turbulent time in recent years, with visitor numbers fluctuating between 2000 and 2006.

However, the restoration of peace to the country is thought to have delivered a welcome boost to the tourism industry, along with an increasing numbers of services provided by international airlines.

According to Nepal's national news agency RSS, some 6,000 passengers are brought into the country every day by international carriers.

Among the operators that serve the Asian country are Korean Air, Dragon Air, China Southern and Etihad Airways.

Targets have been set to boost the number of annual visitors to Nepal to 1m by 2010.
